How to Cut Small Angles With a Mitre Saw

Whenever you are working on a home improvement project such as cutting baseboard or window frames, there are times when you will need to make small angle cuts in order to wrap a piece of wood or other type of material around a corner, or fold against each other for an inside corner. While in the past carpenters needed to use a handheld miter saw in order to make these types of cuts, the modern era allows for the use of chop saws, otherwise known as miter saws, to make small angle cuts for a wide variety of projects.

Instructions

Put on your safety glasses and work gloves. Place the edge of your tape measure against the outer edge of your area and measure out the length of your piece. Transfer those measurements to the wood trim, plastic or other type of material you need to be cutting. For outside corners, for example, measure from the inside corner or the adjacent piece of material out roughly one inch beyond the finish point for your angle area. Mark it with a pencil.

Place a piece of material onto the tray of the miter saw, with the back against the fence of the saw. Adjust the piece as necessary depending on whether you need to cut the angle against the face or against the back (flip it over with the back against the fence or opposite if you are cutting from the face). Loosen the mechanism on the chop saw and adjust the angle of the miter blade to your needed degree. Tighten the mechanism once you have set it to your desired angle.

Hold a piece of wood in place with one hand while you pull the trigger of the chop saw with the other hand. Firmly press the blade into the piece of wood to cut your angle, then release the trigger and let the spring mechanism pull the blade out of the wood. Check your piece of wood or other material against the area where you will be installing it and make any additional changes by incrementally adjusting the angle mechanism on the chop saw.
