Checklist For Renovations

Having a checklist before you start your renovation can help you keep organized and ensure that you don't forget an important step. Purchase a binder so you can store your checklist in a place where it won't get lost. Keep other essential information in the binder as well, such as quotes from contractors, building plans and receipts.
  1. Planning

    • Your planning checklist should include the type of renovation you want to do, the location of appliances, furniture and windows and the styles and colors you want for finishing materials. Consider how your family uses the space you are renovating and how it could be improved. Note how traffic flows through the room and if you need multipurpose areas, such as a family room that includes a desk for work and homework.

    Specifications

    • Once you have a general idea of what you want to accomplish with your renovation, you'll need to have specific plans on your checklist. Hire a contractor to do this if it is a complex renovation, but a simple one can be done with online programs if you plan to do the work yourself. If looking for a contractor, get plenty of references and check them. Also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints about the person you're considering. Store any quotes you have received in your binder. Check with your local municipality as well because some renovations require a permit.

    Financing

    • Financing a renovation is an important part of your checklist. Determine whether you can pay for the renovation outright or if you require financing from your bank. You can use a credit card or line of credit, but you'll get a better interest rate if you choose a line of credit that is secured against your house. Also get your home appraised so you know its worth before the renovation. You can then redo the appraisal after you're done so you know how much it has increased in value.

    Inspecting and Finishing

    • While the work is being done, be involved and use your checklist to ensure that the plans are being followed and that the contractor is staying within your budget. Pay only an agreed upon percentage up-front, another part during the renovation and the final portion only when the renovation is completed to your satisfaction. Include a decorating portion in your checklist so you know what you need to purchase to completely finish and decorate the space.
