Some bi-levels have narrow entryways or numerous walls contributing to the feeling of a closed space. A closed-off area can feel crammed even though there is a good amount of overall square footage in the home. Open up spaces by removing walls or entryways. Simply taking down one wall can make an area feel much more open and inviting. Consult a licensed contractor, architect or engineer prior to making any major renovations such as the demolition of walls.
Many bi-levels were built decades ago and could certainly benefit from some updating. Various remodeling adjustments can change the character and floor plan of a home. Removing certain walls and adding new walls at various angles can transform a home from aged to modern. The addition of wider entryways and more open space will give the house a contemporary makeover. Another contemporary element is a spiral staircase. Installing a spiral staircase will add a custom-designed flare along with functionality to the space.
The lower level of a bi-level home is highly versatile. It can be an ideal place for an extra bathroom, laundry room, den or reading room. Because the lower level of a home is generally cooler than the upper, the space may be perfect for a home gym. The nice thing about a lower level is that you step down to access it. This easy-access area may be a more suitable option for certain types of rooms than others. For instance, it may be easier to carry a big load of laundry down a few stairs rather than up a flight of several stairs. Also because washing machines and dryers give off a lot of heat, it is more convenient to keep that equipment downstairs where it will not overheat the house. Additionally, bulkier items such as fitness machines are heavy and difficult to carry upstairs.
The master bedroom of a bi-level may be built upstairs with other rooms located downstairs. Generally, the bathrooms of bi-levels are average or small compared to the size of bathrooms in more modern homes. However, the master bedroom can be switched to the lower level to provide more space. Using the largest room or area of the lower level will allow for the addition of a large master bathroom and possibly even spacious closets. Knock down walls to further open up the area, creating a spacious master suite.
