How to Tear Out a Concrete Block Wall

Demolishing projects are a combination of physical labor and using modern tools to make the job easier. While sledgehammers and chisels are still applicable, you will complete most demo projects with jackhammers or demolition hammers, especially in the case of block walls. If you need to remove a concrete block wall in your home or garden area, you can use a combination of old-school and modern, or you can choose one option over the other depending on the size of your demolition project.

Instructions

Beat the wall down with a sledgehammer if you are dealing with a small-scale project. The sledgehammer is one of the most effective tools for tearing down concrete block walls, as it requires nothing more than some physical force behind the swing, and then the head of the hammer does the rest. Use this for small-scale projects, as swinging a sledgehammer can be a tiring feat if repeated for several hours.

Cut any rebar or metal framing holding the block wall together internally with an angle grinder and a metal blade. Larger concrete block walls use metal frames or pieces of rebar (long, straight pieces of metal) to add additional stability to block walls during their construction, and if your wall has a metal frame within you will need to cut the pieces into manageable size during the demolition process to completely remove the wall.

Remove the wall with a demolition hammer for large-scale projects. Large walls, where a sledgehammer is not a viable option due to the size, can utilize a demolition hammer. The chisel bit of the hammer vibrates when it is pressed against a hard surface while the trigger is depressed, allowing you to quickly and efficiently work your way through a concrete block wall.
