Sump Basin Installation

If your home has a basement prone to flooding, the installation of a sump pump may be a way to preserve both your home's foundations and the things inside your basement. Sump pumps are pumps that drain collected water from a basin and the pump it out. The most involved part of installing a sump pump is making the sump pit, which typically involves renting a jackhammer and using it to remove a section of the slab in the basement.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area where you will install the sump basin. There are two things to consider when doing this. First, find an area that naturally tends to collect water. Secondly, find an area that is an optimal place to run outflow pipes once the pump is installed.

    • 2

Mark with chalk where you will dig the pit. The boundaries of the pit basin should be at least 8 inches out from the wall.

    • 3

Rent a jackhammer from a local rental company. If you have never used a jackhammer before, ask for an instruction manual or have an attendant demonstrate how to use it.

    • 4

Cut the perimeter of the slab out with the jackhammer and then use it or a sledgehammer to break up the middle chunks. Remove the pieces of slab.

    • 5

Use a shovel to dig out about 6 inches of dirt from the entire pit area. Dig a hole in the middle of the pit area where the pit basket will go.

    • 6

Lay the pit liner out over the area and install the pit basket. Fill the area in with loose gravel around the pit.

    • 7

Mix cement with water in a large bucket or wheelbarrow and spread it over the gravel and around the pit. Use a hand trowel to smooth the cement
