How to Build an Epoxy Pebble Countertop

Pebble counters are a beautiful, textured addition to kitchens and bathrooms, but can be impractical if not constructed carefully. Pebbles are inherently different in size, shape and color. Making a counter from pebbles would make a rough and uneven surface. However, by covering that surface with layers of clear epoxy you bring the spirit of the outdoors in a much more useable way. The epoxy not only bonds the rocks to the counter, it also provides a clear, flat surface that is extremely durable.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface for the stone by building a frame. The frame will be a permanent addition to the counter top and should be only as high as the finished counter. Use the 1/2-inch boards nailed with finishing nails to make the frame.

    • 2

Pour the two epoxy ingredients into separate mixing containers and mix each ingredient as per the instructions, usually 2 minutes. Pour the epoxy over the counter and spread with the trowel to cover with a thin layer.

    • 3

Mix another batch of epoxy the same as the first and add some pebbles. Start with 1 cup of pebbles and add more if necessary, mixing them into the epoxy. You want enough epoxy to cover all the pebbles, but not so much that the epoxy cannot coat them completely.

    • 4

Pour the mixture with the pebbles onto the counter and spread with the trowel. Spread the mixture evenly over a small portion of the surface area, keeping the height under the border.

    • 5

Mix another batch of epoxy with pebbles and spread in the same fashion. Repeat until the surface is covered. Let the epoxy dry for at least 24 hours.

    • 6

Mix another batch of epoxy, same as before, and apply to the counter top. Spread the epoxy with the trowel to make a flat surface.

    • 7

Continue adding layers of epoxy to the counter top until the height is level with the border. Allow ample time between layers for drying.
