How to Measure a Room for Baseboard Heaters

Baseboard heaters are installed at the baseboards of your home. They run on electricity and should be large enough to heat the rooms in which they are placed. When measuring rooms for baseboard heaters, determine the square footage of each room to figure out how many watts are required. Larger rooms may need multiple heaters to heat the entire room well.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the room with a tape measure.

    • 2

Measure the length of the room with a tape measure.

    • 3

Multiply the width by the length to get the square footage. For example, if the room is 10-by-12 feet, the square footage would be 120 square feet.

    • 4

Multiply six watts per square foot for a new home and 10 watts per square foot for an older home. For example, a newer home with a 120-square-foot room would require a 720 watt baseboard heater. An older home will need a 1200 watt baseboard heater for the same size room.
