How to Seal a Tumbled Stone Tile Shower

Tumbled stone is one of the more difficult stones to work with, both in terms of installation as well as maintenance, but it is also one of the higher-end options you can choose for your home. Ultimately, you are left with a soft, refined look for your bathroom, but the nature of tumbled stone is that it readily soaks up water. You need to seal any tumbled stone areas near water, such as showers.

Instructions

Protect the areas around the stone shower where the stone terminates against another surface material, such as paint, wallpaper or wood. Use a handheld masking machine to apply a 12-inch row of paper running around the perimeter of the shower where it is necessary.

Mix the sealer in a garden sprayer container according to the manufacturer’s directions. Different sealers have different mixture requirements with water, while others are sprayed on straight. Fill the container with 10 percent or slightly more than what the container calls for in terms of your square footage area, and cap it off.

Pressurize the sprayer with the handle and adjust the tip so that a fine mist sprays out onto the wall. Cover the entire natural stone surface with a visible wet layer of sealer and let it soak into the face. With tumbled stones, you will usually need to apply several coats of sealer to achieve total protection, since the stone naturally soaks up the moisture. Allow the sealer to dry for the length of time recommended by the manufacturer.
