How to Cut Brick Into Tiles

If you are looking for a rustic, old-fashioned look for your home, there is no better option than a split brick floor or wall. It’s also a great way to recycle old bricks, as split bricks are turned into tile by cutting them into tile-sized pieces that are then installed just as ceramic tile is installed. You can cut any size or type of brick down to size, which means you can customize your tile area with whatever type of brick you come across.

Decide how thick you want to cut your brick tiles. The average size of a normal piece of ceramic tile is between 3/16 inch and 1/4 inch, so you should go for the same thickness if you want to install them in the traditional way. You can also adjust the tiles thicker or thinner if you plan to install them as a liner somewhere and they need to match another material’s thickness.

Set the gauge on the tray of the tile saw to the thickness you want to cut the brick. With the saw off, maneuver the gauge into position along the back end of the tray and use the measurement notches on the tray to determine where to set the gauge. Ensure that it is sufficiently tight and double check it periodically during cutting to ensure it remains tight.

Cut the pieces of brick down into tiles. The same routine is used for cutting brick lengthwise and cutting brick across the width of the piece. Place the piece of brick onto the tray of the saw and ensure it is tight against the back of the tray and the gauge itself. Turn on the saw and push the tray forward so the blade cuts the brick. Remove your brick tile and repeat the process until you've cut all the brick you plan to use.
