How to Import IGES Curves in Moldflow

Moldflow is a CAD program used to simulate injection mold projects. According to Santa Clara University, the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES or IGS) was developed by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology, other government entities and various corporations as a format for transferring graphics between three-dimensional CAD modeling programs. Moldflow uses the Moldflow Design Link as an interface translator of geometric data between commercial CAD programs and both Moldflow Plastics Advisor and Moldflow Plastics Insight. The easiest way to import IGES curves into the Moldflow environment is as a runner, or series of curves representing the entire injection mold shape. This prevents the curves from losing their mathematical relationship to each other and preserves the shape of the intended injection mold.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring up Moldflow and select “View” and “Toolbar.” Click on “Advisor” if it is not already selected. The Moldflow Advisor toolbar is displayed. Ensure that “Part Only” is not enabled under Analysis Mode.

    • 2

Click on the “Set Injection Locations” icon and place the injection locations on the CAD model of the part to be molded. Display the injection mold cavity for which you want to create the runner. Select “Tools,” “Runner” and “Create Runners” and the “Create Runner Toolbox” is displayed. Enter the information requested to define the runner. Click “OK.”

    • 3

Click “Tools,” “Runner” and “Create Gates” and the “Create Gates Toolbox” appears. Enter the plastics injection location and enter the requested information to define the gate. Click “OK.”

    • 4

Select “Tools,” “Runner” and “Create Sprue” and the “Create Sprue Toolbox” appears. Enter the requested information to define the sprue and indicate the drop point. Click “OK.”

    • 5

Click “Tools,” “Runner” and “Import Runners” and the “Import” dialog box appears. Click “Browse” and select “IGES Files (or *.igs) from the drop down menu. Find your project’s IGES layout file and open it. The IGES runner is now imported and open in Moldflow.
