Inexpensive Roofing Methods

Installing a roof is expensive and necessary to keep homes safe and secure from the elements. While some roofing methods can be very costly, certain methods are available that can severely reduce the cost. The overall cost is going to vary, depending on the size of the home and whether homeowners can perform the installation themselves or need to call a professional.
  1. Asphalt Shingles

    • Asphalt shingles are inexpensive compared to metal or concrete shingles, and come in a variety of styles and colors. Because the shingles are manufactured in bulk, they are more affordable. Asphalt shingles are also easy to install, which makes them inexpensive as well. The life span for asphalt roofing is about 15 to 30 years; however, the material is susceptible to mold and mildew. While the tiles can be damaged easily, they are also relatively simple to repair.

    Built-up Roof

    • A built-up roof is an inexpensive method for installing a flat roof, and according to RoofHelp.com, this method has been used since the 1840s. This type of roof combines asphalt and coal tar with a waterproofing material, which are layered on top of each other. In addition to being inexpensive, the material is fire-resistant and very reliable. However, this type of roof is difficult to install and may be susceptible to leaks.

    Modified Bitumen

    • Modified bitumen is also an inexpensive roofing method for flat roofs. The material is made of asphalt that has been modified to become rubber-like. This roofing method was developed in the 1970s and two or more layers may be laid on top of a house. Modified bitumen is a very durable roof; however, it does not do well in rainy environments. It is easy to locate leaks and simple to repair problems in this type of roof.

    Ceramic Shingles

    • Ceramic shingles are common in the Southwest and an inexpensive roofing method. The tiles stand up well to intense sunlight and will prevent heat from passing through. These tiles are cheap and easy to make repairs on. In addition to coming in a variety of colors, ceramic tiles offer homes a more traditional look.
