How to Convert Cabinets Into Open Shelving

If you're looking for a low-cost makeover for your kitchen or bathroom cabinets, convert them into open shelving. You need little more than a screwdriver and paint. The finished renovation will give the space a new expansive and open feel, particularly in smaller kitchens.

Mild soap
Putty or caulk

Instructions

  Loosen and remove the hinge screws on the first cabinet door you'll remove. Loosen and remove the screws on the cabinet structure as well to free the door. Repeat this step with each cabinet door to remove all of them.

  Remove any decorative facing to visually open up the shelves. Use a hammer or flat-head screwdriver to pry the nails free carefully. Remove the center vertical facing slat using the same method. Repeat this for all cabinet units.

  Wipe down the inside of each cabinet and the face with a damp, clean rag. Scrub off any built-up grime using a scouring pad and mild soap.

  Wipe the cabinets dry with a clean cloth.

  Fill exposed screw holes with putty or caulk. Scrape off the excess product with a putty knife. Allow it to dry completely.

  Prime the cabinets if you want to paint your open shelves, applying it with a brush. Let the primer dry completely.

  Paint the shelves your desired color. Paint the facing of each shelf as well to create a finished look. Let the paint dry completely.
