How to Add a Beadboard to a Raised Panel Cabinet Door

Beadboard refers to an old style of woodwork that was made with small slats of wood that were joined via tongue and groove vertically. Today, you can purchase entire panels of beadboard and use them as wainscoting, wall paneling or even to reface your cabinets. This provides the rustic look of beadboard with much less effort. You'll need some basic tools for this project and some past woodworking experience is helpful, but not necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the front panel for each cabinet. Make a note of these measurements.

    • 2

Cut the beadboard to fit with a circular saw. Trace out the size needed on the back of the beadboard. Feed it through the circular saw.

    • 3

Finish the edges of the beadboard. Sand them smooth with a fine-grit sanding block. Stain them to match the color on the front of the board and let the stain dry for four hours. Sand it lightly and apply a clear coat of polyurethane. Let this dry for four hours.

    • 4

Glue the beadboard to the panel of the cabinet. Spread out a thin layer of wood glue on the facing of the cabinet. Press the beadboard into place and make sure it is perfectly centered.

    • 5

Clamp the beadboard to the cabinet with wood clamps. Use foam cushions between the grippers to avoid damaging the wood. Use at least two clamps per cabinet door. Let the glue dry for eight to 10 hours before removing the clamps.
