How to Install Frameless Cabinet Hinges

A framless cabinet door requires a special type of hinge to hold it in place. The hinges, called European style or cup, are designed to attach to the doors inside the cabinet since there is no wood frame where the hinge goes on a traditional cabinet. They are self-closing and adjustable to make installation easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure down 3 to 4 inches, or the desired distance from the top of the cabinet where you want to place the hinge. Measure up the same distance from the bottom for the second hinge. Draw a line on the front of the cabinet opening and into the inside where the bracket for the hinge will attach.

    • 2

Hold the door up to the cupboard's opening in the open position with the top of the door aligned as it will be when installed. Draw a line from the inside of the cabinet onto the door so you know where to attach the cup portion of the hinge.

    • 3

Hold the hinge's bracket portion inside the cabinet where you will attach it. Drill pilot holes through the two screw holes on the bracket. Screw only the bracket portion of the hinge to the inside of the cabinet.

    • 4

Create the hole to hold the cup portion of the hinge on the inside of the cabinet door using the lines you drew as a reference for location. Use a jig with your drill to make a 35 mm hole. Verify that your hinges don't have different hole size requirements. Practice the hole on a scrap piece of wood first to ensure it works properly.

    • 5

Place the hinge's cup portion in the hole you made. Drill pilot holes through the screw holes on this portion of the hinge. Screw the hinge in place with the screws provided.

    • 6

Slide the door portion of the hinge to the bracket you already installed inside the cabinet. Adjust the screws on the hinges with a screwdriver as needed to allow the cabinet door to close properly.
