How to Undermount a Granite Counter

Granite countertops are one of the hardest substances you can use in your kitchen. One drawback is figuring out how to attach the slab to the tops of your cabinets, since you cannot simply drill screw holes into the surface as you might with a wood or composite countertop. Thankfully, along with durability comes weight and therefore stability. However, you still need to anchor the countertop in place so the seams don’t widen along the edges over time.

Determine what thickness of medium density fiberboard, or MDF sheet you need to use by looking at the fronts of your cabinets. If the cabinet doors extend up to within 1/8-inch of the edge of the cabinet, use 3/4-inch thick MDF. If the cabinet doors extend within 3/4-inch of the edge of the cabinet, use 1/2-inch thick MDF.

Cut the MDF to fit the tops of the cabinets with a skill saw.

Screw the MDF in place with wood screws. Always pre-drill pilot holes when working with cabinetry to prevent the wood from splitting when you sink screws into the hard wood. Sink the tops of the screws below the surface of the MDF. Clean off the surface of the MDF to remove any sawdust.
