How to Build Simple Plywood Cupboards

Whether you want to add new cabinetry to your kitchen or replace unattractive cupboards, you can build simple plywood cupboards on your own at home. By making your own cupboards you can save money on labor or contractor charges, and using plywood makes the cupboard unit inexpensive. Set aside a weekend for building your cupboards and leave them unfinished, or paint or stain the plywood as desired before installing them onto your wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length across of your wall where the cupboard will go. Subtract 1.5 inches from this length. Measure and cut four pieces of plywood 1 foot wide by this desired length. Measure and cut two 1-by-2-inch boards to the full length of the wall area.

    • 2

Measure the height of the wall space for the cupboard. Measure and cut two pieces of plywood 1 foot wide by this exact height. Measure and cut two 1-by-2-inch boards to this height. Set all four of the 1-by-2-inch boards aside.

    • 3

Lay one of the length plywood boards flat on the ground. Stand the height boards upright parallel to one another at each end of the length board. Make the corners flush. Insert three evenly spaced screws through the height boards and into each end of the length board to secure.

    • 4

Flip the unit over and place another length board between the unsecured ends of the height boards. Make the corners flush and insert three screws into each end to secure.

    • 5

Lay the frame unit over with the opening facing up. Set the two remaining length boards into the cupboard frame and adjust to space them evenly for shelving. Insert three screws through the frame and into the shelves at each end to secure them.

Measure the dimensions of your frame along the outer edges. Measure and cut a piece of plywood to this size to be the back of your cupboard. Lay the plywood over the opening of the frame. Insert a screw every 6 inches around the edges to attach the back to the frame. Flip the unit over so it rests on the back.

Measure and cut each end of the 1-by-2-inch boards on a 45 degree angle. Arrange the four boards into a rectangle over the face of the cupboard frame and align the corners. Nail finishing nails through the boards and into the frame every 6 inches.
