How to Make Your Cabinet Shelving Laminate

Instead of spending money on shelf paper that has to be replaced regularly, laminating your shelves provides a permanent solution. This material is very low cost and, in fact, costs less than some shelf liners. The process for installing laminate on shelves is just like putting it on a countertop, but you won't have to worry about edging and extra trimming. This project can be completed in just a few hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim router
  • 1/2-inch carbide straight cutter
  • Laminate sheets
  • Contact cement
  • Paint roller
  • J roller

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shelves and place them in a work area. You will need plenty of room to get around and work.

    • 2

Measure the shelves with a measuring tape. Write down the length and width measurements.

    • 3

Trim the laminate to fit with a trim router. Use a new carbide blade to avoid ripping the laminate.

    • 4

Spread contact cement onto the surface of the shelves with a paint roller. A small roller works best. Spread on an even layer.

    • 5

Spread contact cement onto the back of each piece of laminate. Allow the contact cement on the shelves and the laminate to dry to the touch.

    • 6

Press the laminate into the contact cement. Line it up so that the edges match and press the laminate on firmly.

    • 7

Smooth out the laminate with a J roller. This will give you a good, firm grip.

    • 8

Allow the contact cement time to cure before replacing the shelves. Follow package instructions, but generally expect to wait between six and eight hours before replacing the shelves.
