How to Install a Premium Glass Mosaic Backsplash

Tile is among the most common backsplash materials in a kitchen. Homeowners often choose tile because they can find a tile that matches the look they want. While ceramic tiles are economical, they do not have the polish or style of premium glass mosaic tiles. High-quality glass mosaic tiles need to be installed with white, latex-fortified thinset mortar. Gray thinset mortar will show through the glass tiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the walls for the glass mosaic backsplash. Remove the face plates on the light switch covers with a screwdriver. Wipe down the walls with a damp cloth to ensure they are clean.

    • 2

Locate the focal point for the backsplash. This is typically above the sink or stove area. In the center of that area, create a vertical line with a chalk line or level and pencil.

    • 3

Spread thinset mortar on the wall next to the marked center guideline with a notched trowel. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle, and move it over the wall to spread the thinset.

    • 4

Fit the mosaic glass tile sheets into the thinset. Line up the sheets, starting at the bottom of the wall and along the center guideline. Cut the paper front on the sheets with a pair of scissors to fit the tiles to size. When necessary, use a pair of two-wheeled glass tile nippers to trim individual tiles to size.

    • 5

Place a wood block over the sheets, and gently tap on the block with a hammer. This will even out the glass tiles so they are level as the mortar dries.

    • 6

Let the mortar dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove the paper facing on the glass tiles. Use a damp sponge to wet the paper and underlying glue. Remove the paper slowly, so you don’t pull up the tiles with it. Allow the tiles to set up for 48 hours.

    • 7

Apply grout to the tile joints with an epoxy grout float. After filling all the tile joints, remove the extra grout from the glass tiles with a wet sponge. Allow the grout to set up for 48 hours.

    • 8

Apply caulk to the bottom ledge on the tiles. Spread a bead of caulk along the ledge, and smooth the caulk with your finger. Let the caulk dry for 24 hours. Reinstall the face plates on the electrical outlets and switches.
