How to File Granite Counters to Make Sink Fit

Granite develops naturally in the earth where manufacturers mine it in large slabs and cut them into countertops. When homeowners order a granite counter, they provide measurements to the manufacturer who then cuts the granite to size and creates sink openings. If you realize during installation that the sink hole is slightly too small, you can enlarge it using a metal file. The file grinds away small portions of the granite until the sink slips down into the proper location.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the sink into the opening in the granite countertop to determine where the hole requires adjustments. Look at the rim of the sink and identify any locations that do not sit flush on the counter. Mark these areas using a dry erase marker so that you can identify them later.

    • 2

Grasp the sink and lift it up out of the hole in the granite. Set the sink out of the way.

    • 3

Locate one of the marked areas on the granite and place a course metal file on it at a 45-degree angle to the granite. Push the file back and forth with firm, vigorous pressure to begin filing down the opening.

    • 4

Work your way around the sink opening, filing down any additional marked areas.

    • 5

Wipe the top surface of the granite using tack cloth to remove all dust and the dry erase marker lines

    • 6

Replace the sink in the granite opening to again test the fit. Ensure the rim of the sink rests completely on the granite surface under it.
