How Do I Replace a Double Wall Oven With a Convection Microwave Oven?

Changing appliances in the kitchen is often very exciting for homeowners. Often the newer appliance has improved design features relative to the older unit. Usually, appliances are replaced when older units have begun to fail or look unattractive. When you're replacing an older built-in double wall oven with a newer model, the first thing to check is your exact width measurements since the older appliance is often a different size than the newer model.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the existing oven. Select a replacement oven that's the same width or slightly smaller. If you choose a smaller size, purchase a trim kit with the oven. A trim kit contains a series of panels designed to fit around the exterior of the oven to hide the opening where the oven sits.

Turn off the electricity and gas to the kitchen. If you don't know how to turn off the gas then have the gas company or a licensed contractor turn it off for you. Since the gas line will also need to be disconnected it's a good idea to have the contractor disconnect and reconnect any gas lines you use since these have special code requirements.

    • 3

Open the cabinet door directly above the top oven. Often this cabinet will house an appliance specific electrical breaker box just for the double ovens. Turn off the electricity at this box as well. Unscrew the top of the junction box and unscrew the wires from the box. Separate the wires and screw each separate wire with a wire nut.

    • 4

Disconnect the vent stack that you should see running upward from the top or side of the ovens. Look for nuts and bolts holding the stack together. Remove the fasteners and pull the vent stack out of the oven. Remove the oven doors by tilting them out and lifting upward. Set them aside. Look for oven mounting screws through the bottom of the cabinet. Unscrew the fasteners.

    • 5

Remove other oven mounting screws and brackets along each side of the ovens and sometimes along the underside of the bottom oven. Slide the detached ovens out of the cabinet and set them aside.

    • 6

Center the new oven in the area where you want it. Typically, this will be at the top of the existing cabinet hole so your electrical and gas elements will be within easy reach, along with your venting stack. Install your new appliance following the manufacturer's directions. Many ovens mount using screws through the top and side cabinets or with brackets. You may need to build 2-by-4-inch supports underneath with a plywood shelf. Follow the directions for your model so it's properly supported.

Connect your new oven wiring to the existing junction box wires. Attach the vent stack as necessary and recommended. Attach your trim kit around the outside of the oven to hide the gaps between the cabinet and the appliance. Because your new appliance is shorter you may need to cover the opening below the new appliance. Use a veneer cabinet panel in a color that matches your cabinets for an easy fix.
