How to Build a Sliding Garbage Can for Cabinets

What can be more unsightly in a customized kitchen than a sloppy, smelly garbage can in the room. Conceal the can inside a large base cabinet using a basic slider assembly available at any home improvement store. While a kit for this project is available, you can easily create your own sliding garbage can and save some money. You will need to purchase heavy-duty drawer sliders to ensure that your installation endures for years. Apart from the sliders, you need only standard tools and basic DIY skills to build a sliding trash receptacle for your own kitchen.

Instructions

  1. Create the Base Box

    • 1

Measure the width of the cabinet to determine the width of the base box. If your cabinet has a face frame that extends into the opening, take that into consideration. Your garbage can must roll out beyond the frame of the cabinet.

    • 2

Cut a section of plywood according to the base width you determined for your cabinet. Measure and cut two additional pieces of plywood to form two flanks for the base, one of the left and one on the right. These flanks should measure about 8 inches high.

    • 3

Glue and nail the flank sections on top of the base section. Allow to dry.

    • 4

Measure and cut a section of plywood for the back of the base box. This back section need only be a thin, 5-inch strip of plywood. Glue and nail the back to the flanks of plywood. The back section provides additional support to the box and prevents the flanks from spreading out of place on the base.

    • 5

Sand the wood edges. Prime and paint the base box. Set aside.

    Create the Can Holder Box

    • 6

Measure the width of the base box and the height of your base cabinet. Cut plywood and assemble the pieces to create a box that will hold the garbage can. Glue and nail the pieces of plywood together. The box should have four sides, a bottom and a top.

    • 7

Take your garbage can and turn it upside down on the top of your can holder box. Center the can on the top of the box. Trace the outline of the garbage can with a pencil.

    • 8

Measure 1/2 inch in from the tracing and draw the outline. Use the jigsaw to cut around the inner outline, creating a hole into which the garbage can will sit.

    • 9

Sand the edges of the wood. Prime and paint the can-holder box. Allow to dry.

    Assemble the Sliding Unit

    • 10

Install a drawer glide on the inside of the flanks of the base box by screwing screws into the mounting holes of the glide assembly.

    • 11

Position the can holder box into the base box and mark the location of the newly installed drawer glides with your pencil.

    • 12

Install the corresponding drawer glide extension to the can holder box with screws.

    • 13

Place the base box into the base cabinet. Screw the box onto the inside bottom of the base cabinet.

    • 14

Slip the can holder the base box in the cabinet by matching and connecting the drawer glide assembly pieces together.

    • 15

Replace the original base cabinet door by nailing the cabinet to the front of the can holder.
