How to Make a Soffit Box for the Top of Kitchen Cabinets

A soffit conceals the space between the tops of kitchen cabinets and the ceiling, giving a personalized look to your kitchen. Depending on your preference, it can serve only a decorative purpose or it can be used to conceal ducts and pipes. Soffits are commonly made from drywall that is painted to match the surrounding walls. Get someone to help you to reduce the time and effort required to install and construct a soffit box.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and record the width of the wall above the cabinets where you want to install the soffit. Cut two identical lengths of 2-by-2 inch lumber to the noted measurement using a handsaw. These lengths of lumber form the upper and lower plates for the soffit’s front face.

    • 2

Measure and cut lengths of 2-by-2 lumber to joint every 16 inches between the upper and lower plates. Secure these support pieces between the top and bottom plates with a nail gun so it resembles a ladder.

    • 3

Run a stud finder over the ceiling where you want to install the soffit, and mark the locations of joists with a pencil. Assign your helper to hold the front of the soffit over its desired spot against the ceiling. Use a screwdriver to drive screws through the top plate of the soffit and into the marked joists.

    • 4

Measure and cut two identical lengths of 2-by-2 lumber to size for the lower panel of the soffit. Also cut lengths of 2-by-2 lumber to secure between the panels every 16 inches. Assemble the bottom panel the same way as the front face.

    • 5

Use a screwdriver to attach the lower soffit panel to the studs behind the cabinet wall and the front soffit panel.

    • 6

Measure and cut drywall for the front and lower soffit plates using a drywall saw. Place the pieces on the frame and attach these using screws, spaced 8 inches apart.

    • 7

Attach a length of corner bead board to the corner of the soffit box using a screwdriver. Apply a coat of joint compound over screw heads, and wipe away the excess with a putty knife. Allow the drywall to dry according to the time specified on its label’s directions.

Smooth areas over that you applied joint compound to by using fine-grit sandpaper. Prime the soffit box and allow it to dry before painting it.
