How to Add a Lazy Suzan Cabinet

Retrofit Existing Cabinets

  Choose a Lazy Susan shelving system to fit your existing cabinets. Kits are made for square corner cabinets that have a long and deep cabinet as the only access into the dead space and systems are also available for angled corner cabinets with fixed shelves.

  Remove all of the items from the cabinet. Insert the Lazy Susan shelving unit above the existing shelf or halfway up the height of the cabinet if there is no shelf. Press the mounting location to the inside of the cabinet wall. Rotate the shelf outward to see how it fits and operates. If it works correctly at that location, mark the installation holes.

  Retract the shelf into the cabinet and draw an outline around the exterior curved side onto any existing shelf. You will want to cut the shelf to provide additional storage beyond the curve and storage system, saving that portion of your existing shelf for seldom used items. Remove the shelf system from the cabinet.

  Press the blade of a plunge router tip into the wood 1/4 inch outside your outline. Some shelves can be removed with a reciprocating saw. Follow the outline to cut the shelf. Use a hammer and pry bar to remove a shelf that is being replaced with the Lazy Susan.

  Place the Lazy Susan shelf over your mounting screws location and screw the shelf into place. Mount a second shelf below the first, just above the bottom shelf of the cabinet.

Install a Lazy Susan Cabinet

  Install the Lazy Susan cabinet first when you are installing base kitchen cabinets. Lazy Susan cabinets are corner cabinets with built-in shelves that rotate and often extend so that you can access items stored in the depths of the cabinet.

  Find the high spot in the kitchen floor along your cabinet run areas. To keep your base cabinets level, you must find the high spot and then shim all of the cabinets up to that level. Use a laser level to assist you in finding the high spot.

  Measure up from the high spot with the height measurement of the base cabinet and mark the wall. Position the laser level on the mark and make additional marks along the wall. Draw a level, horizontal line along your walls indicating the height of the cabinets. Move a stud finder along the line and mark the location of each stud.

  Move your Lazy Susan cabinet into the corner. Shim up the cabinet as necessary to raise it even with the line on the wall. Screw through the back of the cabinet and into the studs to hold the cabinet in place.

  Position the adjacent cabinet next to your first cabinet. Line up the faces of the cabinets. Shim up the height. Screw the cabinets together at the sides. Sometimes it is necessary to shim between the cabinet and the wall if the wall is not straight. Continue until your cabinets are installed.
