The Disadvantages of Corner Kitchen Sinks

Sinks are one of the less appealing parts of a kitchen, so they're sometimes relegated to a corner where they're less visible. However, a corner sink also may be less functional. The odd angle and smaller size of a corner sink may create cleanup, lighting and traffic-flow problems in your kitchen.
  1. Types

    • Single and double corner sinks are available for kitchens. Single sinks sit in a corner diagonally, and the faucet and handles are usually attached to the sink. With double sinks, the faucet and handles sit in the corner, and one sink is on each side of them. The faucet is moved from one side to the other to fill either sink with water. The drainpipe for a corner sink may be located close to a back wall to create more storage space in the cabinet beneath the sink. One drawback is that there may not be enough room to install a garbage disposal when a drainpipe is close to a wall.

    Natural Light

    • Kitchen sinks are often located beneath a window. Natural light from a window is usually brighter than artificial light, and it reduces the use of electricity. Corner sinks, however, may be in the darkest area of the kitchen to help conserve counter space. That extra space comes at a price if additional lighting is needed to ensure the sink area is well lit for various tasks.

    Size

    • Corner sinks tend to be smaller than other kitchen sinks, so that it's easier to fit them into corners. Their smaller size makes it more difficult to wash large pots and pans. There also may not be enough room for more than one person to work at a single corner sink.

    Dishwashers

    • Dishwashers and sinks are usually next to each other so that they can drain into the same plumbing pipe. Their close proximity also makes it easier to load dishes, utensils and glasses into a dishwasher from the sink. However, a problem with traffic flow sometimes arises with corner sinks when a dishwasher door is open. The door may drop down in front of the sink and block access to it, making it difficult to load dishes from the sink into the dishwasher.
