How to Build a Wine Table for a Small Wine Refrigerator

A small wine refrigerator is ideal for keeping a few bottles of wine chilled and ready to drink. If you want to use a simple small refrigerator as a wine chiller, you'll have to store your refrigerated wine bottles standing upright if the little fridge has no wine shelf. This crowds the refrigerator and makes reading the wine labels difficult. Build a wine table to fit inside the small refrigerator to allow the bottles to lie down. Storing wine horizontally extends the life of the wine by keeping the cork in contact with the liquid.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside dimensions of the refrigerator with a tape measure. Measure the width, height and depth and write the dimensions down. These dimensions represent the area that you have to work within. Measure across the bottom of a wine bottle, which is usually 3.5 inches, and add an inch. This figure represents your clearance from the top of the refrigerator. Subtract this measurement from the height dimension.

    • 2

Cut four 1-by-1 pieces of wood equal to the adjusted height number with a saw. Cut six 1-by-1 pieces of wood equal to the width minus 2 inches. Cut six more 1-by-1 pieces that are equal to the depth minus 2 inches.

    • 3

Lay two legs on a level surface and arrange three of the width pieces between the legs. The first piece of wood lines up with the bottom of the legs and another piece lines up with the top of the legs. Place the third piece in the center of the legs so the front piece looks like a rectangle with a middle crossbar.

    • 4

Secure the wood pieces in place with wood screws and an electric screwdriver. Build another piece exactly like the front. Connect the front and back pieces by attaching the depth pieces to the sides. Line these pieces up with the width pieces on the front and back. When finished, the frame resembles a rudimentary crate.

Attach thin wooden slats to the front and back crossbars, using finishing nails and a hammer. Start at the bottom shelf and work your way up to the top. Space the slats 1 to 2 inches across so the sides of the wine bottles can rest between the slats.

Sand the wine table down with sandpaper to get rid of any rough areas. Stain the wine table with a rich wood stain. The finish wine table will fit inside the small wine refrigerator and have three usable shelves to place wine bottles on.
