How to Cover a Countertop in an Apartment

Renting an apartment has a few drawbacks, including the temporary changes allowed by your landlord. The landlord may allow painting or other changes, provided you leave the apartment looking the way it did when you originally rented the space. Countertop renovations typically call for permanent changes, such as painting or installing new tile on top of the old counters. Vinyl adhesive paper, such as Contact Paper gives the counters a new looks, but peels away easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the counter carefully with dish soap and warm water, washing all areas of the counter and removing any dirt or debris that might ruin your finished look. Rinse the counters with more warm water and dry with paper towels.

    • 2

Place the paper at one end of the counter and unroll the first few inches. Press the unrolled end against one side of the counter and unroll to the opposite side of the counter. Trim the end of the paper, giving you a few extra inches for fitting the counters.

    • 3

Peel the vinyl paper away from the roll, exposing the adhesive side. Press the adhesive side down against the edge of the counter. Lay the paper flat on top of the counter and run the rolling pin across the top, pushing out any air bubbles.

Press the paper down flat, making sure that the adhesive side sticks to the counters. When you reach the opposite end, carefully trim away the excess paper by running the utility knife along the edge. Repeat the process with as many sheets of paper as needed for each area of the counter.

Cut one piece of paper large enough for the area around your sink. Place the paper on top of the counter, covering the sink and press down with your hands, creating the edges for the sink. Cut the paper with the utility knife, cutting out the sink area and press into place on the counter.
