How to Paint Kitchen Sinks

Most kitchen sinks have a painted enamel coating, which can be become chipped and dull with age. Even if the sink continues to serve its function, a dull, chipped sink can ruin the look of an otherwise well kept kitchen. Replacing a kitchen sink altogether can be a time-consuming and expensive task. Fortunately, you can give your kitchen sink a new lease of life by spray painting it in a vibrant new color.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the sink with soap and water to remove greasy residues, water marks and stuck bits of food debris.

    • 2

Dry the sink thoroughly with a clean towel.

    • 3

Rub a fine-grit sandpaper all around the inner and outer bowl of the sink to roughen up the sink's surface.

    • 4

Lay newspaper pages around the surrounding areas of the sink to protect them from paint. Affix the pages using duct tape.

    • 5

Fill an empty spray bottle with a bonding agent. Spray around the surface of the sink, following the manufacturer instructions. Allow the bonding agent to dry for fie to ten minutes, or as long as the manufacturer recommends.

    • 6

Pour primer paint into a spray painter. Use a primer that's compatible with an acrylic polymer coating (the second layer). Check the manufacturer guidelines if you're uncertain.

    • 7

Spray on the primer coat in a back-and-forth motion, drawing the spray painter towards you from the rear of the sink. Release the trigger as you draw towards an edge of the sink. This will decrease the risk of splashing or running. Allow the primer to dry completely--usually around 30 minutes.

    • 8

Apply a second coat of primer following the directions in Step 7.

    • 9

Apply the acrylic polymer coating using the same back and forth motion detailed in Step 7. Add two more coats of acrylic polymer, allowing each coat around 30 minutes to dry.
