How to Design a Built in Kitchen Desk

A built-in desk in the kitchen is an ideal solution to fill out a space between cabinets or wooden furniture units, where you desire more storage or a functional furniture option. Constructing a built-in desk for your kitchen is a simple and quick process that takes only a few hours once you have all the required tools and supplies for the project. Keep in mind that you require wooden furniture or a wall on both sides of the desk.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the measuring tape to get the depth and length of the space where the built-in desk will be mounted. Write down the figures. Draw the desk surface top on the 1-inch plywood sheet using the depth and length figures just collected.

Cut out the built-in desk using the circular saw. Use the medium-grit sandpaper to sand the desk's edges.

    • 3

Use the wall stud finder, if you are attaching the built-in desk to a wall. Find the wall studs in the wall and use the pencil to mark them. Attach the shelving brackets to the wall using the cordless drill and 1-inch-long screws. If you are attaching the desk to a wooden furniture panel, simply attach the shelving brackets to the wooden panels using the 1-inch-long screws and the drill. Ensure that the shelving brackets are evenly placed on both sides of the built-in space, so the desk surface is even.

Place the desk surface in the chosen space, so the desk surface rests on the shelving brackets. Attach the desk to the brackets by screwing 1/2-inch-long screws through the brackets into the desk from the bottom up. Do this for both brackets to ensure the desk is firmly secured.
