How to Cut a Glass Tile Backsplash

Glass tiles can make for an attractive backsplash. Due to varying heights, lengths and obstructions of backsplashes you will need to cut some of the glass tiles you use. Glass tiles come in subway size, single tiles and tiles mounted on a mesh backing. Proper measurements are essential to making cuts accurately.

  • Measuring tape
  • Cardboard or butcher paper
  • Carbon pencil
  • Utility knife
  • Glass scoring tool

Instructions

      Measure the backsplash's length and height. Transfer this measurement to a piece of flat cardboard or paper.

      Note the areas of outlets and window seals and transfer these items to the cardboard or paper, making a template for the backsplash.

      Lay out the tile on the template in the design you want.

      Trace any cuts you need to make onto the tile with a carbon pencil. If the cut is between tiles on the mesh backing, cut the backing with a utility knife.

      Score the tile along the lines you made on the tile. Set the tile over a piece of wire so the score line is over the wire. Use firm pressure on either side of the line to snap the tile.

      Use tile nippers to cut along curves or lines that are not straight by nipping small pieces of tile until the tile is cut along the line.
