What Is a Refrigerator Cabinet?

The term "refrigerator cabinet" does not refer to a storage option within a refrigerator. It refers to a specific type of cabinet unit that is part of the standardized cabinet frames that are commonly found in kitchen designs and layouts. In addition to this type of cabinet, kitchen cabinets are also called corner units, base cabinets, wall-mounted cabinets and lazy Susan corner units.
  1. Refrigerator Cabinet

    • A refrigerator cabinet is a wooden cabinet that hangs above the refrigerator in your kitchen. It is a smaller cabinet than the standardized kitchen cabinets, whether it is a floor-based cabinet or a wall-mounted unit. Refrigerated cabinets only allow for minimal storage, so it is ideal for vases or bowls that you use for special occasions. Fridges that are large in depth may make reaching the refrigerator cabinets difficult.

    Common Measurements

    • Standard measurements are used for these types of cabinets to ensure a cohesive layout of the kitchen's other cabinets. Refrigerator cabinets are 15 inches tall but keep the same depth as standard wall cabinets of 12 inches. The width of these cabinets differs depending on the width of the refrigerator they hang above. These types of cabinets commonly increase in size in 3-inch increments up to 48 inches.

    Mounting Methods

    • The mounting technique is the same for refrigerator cabinets as for other kitchen cabinets, which means that they are not placed directly on the ceiling and the cabinet has 1/2 to 1 inch of space between the cabinet and the wall. This space gives the refrigerator room to ventilate without adding mold and decay to the bottom of the refrigerator cabinet.

    Decorating Refrigerator Cabinets

    • Cabinet doors can be left with a clean surface or can be decorated with the molding used on the remaining kitchen cabinets. You can also decorate these cabinets by painting floral designs on the cabinet door to make it cohesive with your existing floral décor. In terms of hardware options, you can use the same knobs and handles as your other kitchen cabinets, although handles may be easier to use if the cabinet doors are difficult to reach.
