Instructions

    • 1

Choose the paint colors for your kitchen. Either the walls or the cabinets should be a neutral color. The other can be something more vibrant, such as a sunny yellow or light green. Look for colors that complement your kitchen's existing décor.

    • 2

Take off the cabinet doors by removing the screws. This makes painting the cabinets easier.

    • 3

Repair any holes you see in the kitchen walls using a putty knife and spackling compound. Once it's dry, you can smooth it over with sandpaper. Fill holes in cabinets with wood putty and sand when dry.

    • 4

Tape off areas of the kitchen that are next to the walls but that you do not want to paint, such as baseboards, window trim or tiled surfaces.

    • 5

Apply paint to the main wall areas using a paint roller. Paint from the top of the wall and work your way downward.

    • 6

Add paint around the areas you taped off using a small paintbrush.

    • 7

Apply a coat of primer to your kitchen cabinets if you are painting over a wood surface or if the color you're using is much lighter than the existing color. Allow the primer to dry.

    • 8

Rough up the primed surface using sandpaper. If you did not use primer, be sure to rough up the cabinet surface before you paint. Remove dust with a tack cloth.

    • 9

Paint the cabinets with the color of your choice. Use a thin coat or you might have drips of paint. If needed, you can apply a second coat. Wait for the paint to dry before reinstalling the cabinet doors.

    • 10

Remove the painter's tape from all areas of your kitchen once you're finished painting.
