How to Build a Kitchen Desk Attached to Wall

Kitchen desks provide additional storage and workspace in one of the busiest rooms of the home. Some people prefer to have a desk in the kitchen, if they do not have an office in the home. Building a kitchen desk is a simple task, even if you only have a small amount of wall and floor space available. A kitchen desk does not have to be attached to the cabinet units to be part of a cohesive kitchen design.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where you wish to install the kitchen desk. Measure the width and depth to get an approximate surface size of the kitchen desk. Place a sheet of plywood on the floor. Draw one large rectangle measuring the width by the depth with a pencil. Use a square ruler to ensure all corners are an even 90 degrees. The ruler can also help you create straight lines.

    • 2

Cut out the rectangle using a reciprocating saw. If you have children, consider cutting the two corners on one of the wide sides in a curve, so they are not sharp corners. In other words, these are the two corners not lined up against the wall. Sand the cut edges with medium-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Place a stud finder on the wall where the desk will be mounted. Wall studs run vertically behind the walls, so drag the finder horizontally across the wall to locate two studs at the height you want to mount the desk. Make a pencil mark when the device lights up. Ensure that the two studs are within the desk's overall width measurement.

    • 4

Place a shelving bracket on one of the pencil marks. Use the level to ensure it is evenly placed, so your kitchen desk will be even. Install the bracket on the wall using a cordless screwdriver and 3-inch screws. The screws extend into the wall studs, providing optimal support for the desk. Repeat this step with a second shelving bracket and wall stud.

    • 5

Stain or paint the desk to suit your kitchen décor to create a cohesive look. If your cabinets are painted white, consider painting your desk white as well. If the cabinets are stained, apply as many layers of stain as required for an identical look. The more layers of stain you apply, the darker the finish. Let it dry before continuing.

Place the desk on top of the shelving brackets and push it in place, so it is lined up against the wall. Crawl underneath the desk to ensure the brackets are somewhat evenly placed underneath the desk. Attach the desk to the brackets using a screwdriver to drive 1/4-inch screws through the bracket's installation holes.
