How to Make a Knife Block for a Drawer

A knife block is generally made out of wood and used to safely store a knife set. Knife sets can consist of a variety of knife sizes. If you are tired of storing your knife set out on the counter in your kitchen in a traditional butcher block or tossing the knives inside a drawer, make a knife block that can fit inside a drawer. The knives will be out of sight, yet neatly kept.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Wood strips
  • Circular saw (optional)
  • Rubber mat drawer liner
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

    • 1

Take measurements for each of the blades in your knife set. You will need two strips of wood to sit on either side of each knife blade.

    • 2

Purchase strips of wood that are about 1 inch wide. If you purchase the wood from a home improvement center or hardware store, they can likely cut each piece to length for you, or you can cut the pieces with a circular saw.

    • 3

Set a rubber mat drawer liner that fits the inside of your drawer onto your work surface.

    • 4

Arrange the strips of wood on the mat so that each blade can fit between the lengths of wood cut for their lengths. Test the spaces between the wood strips in inserting the blades between them.

    • 5

Lift each wood strip one at a time and apply a strip of hot glue onto the back using a hot glue gun. Put the strip back in place on the rubber mat.

    • 6

Continue to glue down the wood strips, using the knife blades as a guide, until they're all installed.

    • 7

Lay the rubber mat inside the drawer. Insert the knives to complete the knife block.
