How to Install Countertops With Uneven Walls

Interior walls in older homes are often uneven. Uneven walls can present a challenge for many do-it-yourself home improvement projects. Prefabricated countertops come with a back edge designed to be fitted to uneven walls. They include a strip along the back that can be sanded down to retrofit the edge to the uneven line of the wall. Take your time and you will have a seamless countertop installation even in an older home.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the countertop on top of the counter in place against the wall. Make sure you align the countertop exactly how you want it for the final installation.

    • 2

Start at one end of the back edge and drag the scribing tool along the entire joint between the wall and the back edge of the countertop. This transfers the contour of the wall to the counter.

    • 3

Remove the countertop from the counter and place it on a work surface with the back edge facing you. Sand the back edge with a belt sander equipped with an 80-grit sanding belt. Sand the edge down to the pencil line left from the scribing tool.

    • 4

Set the countertop in place on top of the cabinet. Slide the countertop back against the wall.

    • 5

Position the mounting brackets underneath the countertop on the inside corners of the cabinet. Drive the screws included with the brackets through the mounting holes into the bottom side of the countertop to secure it in place.

    • 6

Caulk along the top joint between the countertop and wall using a caulk gun and a tube of kitchen, tub and tile caulk.
