How to Laminate Countertops With Resin

Unfinished kitchen or bathroom countertops constructed of plywood or particleboard can be covered with laminate using a resin adhesive or contact cement. When kitchen or bath cabinets are constructed, they are capped with composite wood. The installer can then lay tile, granite, marble or laminate over the composite wood to finish. You can do the same to finish newly installed bath or kitchen cabinets with unfinished countertops using laminate and adhesive resin or contact cement.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and depth of the unfinished countertops with a tape measure. Write the measurements down on a notepad with a pencil.

    • 2

Turn laminate sheets upside down, laying them on a sturdy table or a workbench.

    • 3

Measure and mark the underside of the laminate sheets with a pencil to have visible lines to follow while cutting the laminate to fit. Make the cut lines slightly larger so the laminate will overlap the countertop.

    • 4

Turn the laminate over and adhere painter's tape to the topside where you are making the cut to avoid splintering. Score the laminate several times until you nearly sever it into two with a utility knife.

    • 5

Flip the laminate sheet back over, with the back side facing upward, then snap off the excess by hand.

    • 6

Place the cut-to-size laminate sheets over the unfinished countertop to ensure they properly fit, then set them aside.

    • 7

Apply a coat of resin adhesive with a sponge brush on the unfinished countertop and let dry long enough to be tacky but not dried-out.

    • 8

Set dowel across the top of the unfinished countertop about 12 to 18 inches apart -- they will not stick to the resin without being pressed down.

    • 9

Lay the cut-to-size laminate sheets over the dowels, then pull out the first dowel and press the laminate over the countertop with a hand roller.

    • 10

Continue to pull out the dowels and press the laminate into the resin adhesive with the hand roller until you have removed all the dowels and the countertop is covered with laminate.

    • 11

Spread petroleum jelly over the laminate and cut it to fit flush with the edges with a router and trim bit to finish the laminate installation. The petroleum jelly will help preserve the integrity of the laminate and lubricate the surface as the router passes back and forth.
