Advantages of Corian Countertops

About Corian

• Corian, trademarked by DuPont, is a solid surface countertop product made from a plastic resin. Because the product is man-made, it can be pigmented in a wide choice of colors and designs, including granite or marble looks, that can be matched to many décors. Although Corian is known for its use as a kitchen counter, the product is well-suited for use in outdoor kitchens. The finish does not dull or get pitted from weathering as granite and natural stone do. Although Corian is somewhat expensive, it is less costly than granite and other natural stone products.

Cleaning

• Corian countertops are resistant to stains and are easy to keep clean. Typically a mild soap and water solution is all that is required. Drying with a soft towel is recommended so water doesn't dull the finish. The surface is not affected by household cleaners, but harsh cleaners and chemicals should be avoided. Corian countertops may require more frequent cleaning than natural countertops to maintain the finish and color. Darker colors need more attention than lighter ones.

Scratches

• The surface of Corian scratches more easily than natural stone countertops. Using cutting boards is recommended to prevent deep cuts in the surface. Fine scratches can be rubbed away with non-abrasive cleaners. Minor scratches can be buffed out using a special cleaning pad. Because the color runs throughout the thickness of the countertop, it does not change or disappear when you buff it down.

Bacteria

• A Corian countertop is a seamless solid surface product that includes the counter, back splash and sink. Since there are no seams or joints, there is no place for water to leak through or for dirt and bacteria to accumulate, making it a hygienic kitchen surface. The surface also resists mold and mildew.

Drawbacks

• Although Corian countertops have many advantages, there are a few drawbacks. The countertops are expensive, although less costly than granite and other natural stones. The countertops are not heat resistant and are not as durable as granite and stone.
