How to Jazz Up Formica Counter Tops

Formica countertops are a form of laminate that is both long-lasting and easy to clean. Over the life of a home, the Formica can become faded through constant exposure to sunlight, heavy use or even improper cleaning. When this happens, you could either replace the entire counter surface or pick your favorite color and paint the Formica countertop. This project will take two days, so make arrangements for dining that does not involve the counters you are painting.

Instructions

    • 1

      Clear off the counters completely.

    • 2

Combine 1/2 cup of bleach, 1/2 cup vinegar and 10 cups of water in a bucket. Put on your gloves and use a sponge to wipe down the entire countertop. This will scrub away any grease residue.

    • 3

Dry the counters and sand the entire surface you are painting with 120-grit sandpaper. You want to rough up the surface so that the primer sticks.

    • 4

Rub the counters down with a tack cloth to remove any dust from the sanding.

    • 5

Cover the edges of the wall with painter’s tape to protect it from the paint.

    • 6

Place a small amount of primer in the paint tray and saturate your paint roller. Slowly roll the paint onto the countertop to avoid bubbles. Let the primer dry for the manufacturer’s recommended time.

    • 7

Paint two to three layers of color onto the countertops, letting the paint dry in between layers.

    • 8

Finish off the countertops with two to three layers of polyurethane varnish to make it last longer.
