How to Cut a Mesh Mosaic Backsplash

Colorful mosaic tiles on your kitchen backsplash lend a sophisticated appeal to the area. Because mosaic tiles are so much smaller than traditional tiles, they often come attached to a mesh surface designed to make installation faster and easier. You can cut the mosaic mesh tiles to fit perfectly in your backsplash area.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area of your kitchen backsplash to determine the exact size you’ll need to trim the mesh-backed tiles.

    • 2

Turn the mesh tile section over so the mesh faces up. Measure to the exact point along the mesh where you’ll need to cut and draw a straight line with a carpenter’s pencil for guidance.

    • 3

Place the mesh-backed tiles onto a cutting mat or worktable. Cut through the mesh by swiping along the line with a utility knife. Remove the cutaway portion of mesh and tile.

    • 4

Trim the tile itself if the measurement line didn’t fall exactly along the edges of the tiles. Place a tile nipper over one mosaic tile and line it up with your pencil marking. Clamp the tile nippers closed and press down in a swift motion to cut the tile. Repeat on the other tiles to form a straight line.
