How to Make a Sheet Metal Vent Canopy

A stove emits unwanted heat and smoke into your home. Attaching a vent canopy directs the heat and smoke up through an exhaust pipe and outside. When creating the stove, you have to decide on the best material to use. Some vent canopies can be made out of sheet metal material. The canopy should be placed at 20 inches up on the wall for stove's running on electric. For gas stoves, place the stove vent canopy 24 inches high above the stove.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of your stove. Create a canopy that covers the entire stove's width and overhangs at least three inches. So if you have a stove that's 33 inches wide, create the canopy as 36 inches. Have the canopy entering the pipe at least 10 inches high.

    • 2

Cut the sheet metal sheets. Use metal snips or a circular saw with a metal cutting blade. Cut one piece as wide as the stove in a triangular shape. This will be the front piece.

    • 3

Cut two pieces as long as the depth of the stove with straight edges on one side that will go against the wall. The other sides should match the angle of the triangle for the front piece to join together.

    • 4

Bend the edges of the sheet metal. Apply epoxy adhesive specifically to join metal together. Join the front and the sides to form the the front and side of the canopy. Cut the last piece to shape.

    • 5

Place the top edges of the canopy up into the exhaust pipe. Fold the edges so they lay flat against the pipe. Pull the canopy out.

    • 6

Affix the back piece of the canopy to the wall with the top entering the pipe. Screw in sheet metal screws into the studs of the wall. Apply epoxy to the top of the pipe entering the exhaust pipe.

    • 7

Apply epoxy to the tops of the front and sides of the glued canopy to attach to the exhaust pipe. Place epoxy on the sides to attach to the back sheet metal piece screwed into the wall. Allow the adhesive to dry and cure.
