How to Cut Laminate Countertops for an Undermounted Sink

Countertops serve as work space for both kitchens and bathrooms. Manufacturers make them from a number of different materials; laminate is perhaps the most common. Laminate countertops consist of sheet laminates adhered to particleboard. These countertops are durable, waterproof and comparatively easy to clean. Cutting through a laminate countertop to mount a sink is a fairly straightforward process, but it is important to support to weight of the counter from below while cutting.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the cutting template included with the sink in the desired location on top of the counter.

    • 2

Draw a cutout line around the edges of the cutting template with a pencil.

    • 3

Support the underside of the portion of the countertop you intend to cut. As the counter is cut, the weight of the cut portion will likely cause the opposite end of the cut area to break off. Supporting the counter from below will prevent this from occurring.

    • 4

Drill a starter hole just inside the cutout line that is large enough to accommodate the blade of a jigsaw.

    • 5

Insert the jigsaw blade into the starter hole, then turn on the saw and cut the countertop by carefully following the cutout line.
