If you plan to install a new countertop or remodel an existing one by replacing the surface with a different type of material, you first need to measure the square footage of the countertop, that is, its two-dimensional area. You can do this fairly easily by performing some basic measurements and making a couple of mathematical calculations.

1
Use a tape measure to measure the countertop's length and width in inches.
-
2
Multiply the two measurements. For instance, if the counter top is 60 inches long by 36 inches wide, multiply 60 times 36 to get 2,160 square inches.

Convert your measurement to square feet by dividing by 144. In this example, you would divide 2,160 by 144 to get 15 square feet.
