How to Replace Kitchen Hardware With Matching Brass Hinges

Replacing the hardware for your kitchen cabinets, drawers or doors can change the look of those objects just enough to effect a subtle change on the look of the kitchen as a whole. This can be especially true when the replacements are in brass. Brass hardware and hinges create an instant impact with viewers, standing out in contrast from wood surfaces with a shine that’s difficult to miss. Fortunately, mounting brass hardware is no different from mounting any other metal. All it requires is a few screws, and the changes are made.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the existing kitchen hardware from doors, drawers or cabinets by using a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the hardware in place, and then pulling the hardware away.

    • 2

Use a tape measure to measure the space between screw holes in hardware items held in place by two or more screws.

    • 3

Obtain replacement hardware pieces in brass from a hardware store. Use the measurements of the screw holes to find replacement pieces to fit two-hole mounts. Make sure to get matching screws for mounting the new hardware.

    • 4

Mount the replacement hardware in place using the screwdriver and the matching screws that came with the new brass pieces. Screw the new hardware tightly in place, taking care not to gouge the cabinet, the drawer or the door surface with the screwdriver tip in the process.

    • 5

Remove hinges that you wish to replace with brass hinges from the doors using the screwdriver. Take the hinges with you to the hardware store to find brass replacements, sticking with external or internal replacements that match the type of hinge removed. Make certain you get matching wood screws for mounting the hinges in place.

    • 6

Use the screwdriver to attach the new brass hinge to the door. If the space for the hinge in the door is too small for the replacement, use a router to expand the space available, cutting into the wood of the door deeply enough to match the depth or shape of the replacement hinge. Attach the new hinge to the door using the screwdriver to screw the wood screws through the mounting holes in the hinge and into the door. Use the placement of the old screws through the cabinet door face as a guide for the new screw placement.

    • 7

Place the door against the cabinet face, or door frame where you need to attach the other side of the hinge. Mark the screw holes against the cabinet face or door frame with a pencil through the screw mounting holes in the hinge.

    • 8

Remove the door and drill small pilot holes into the cabinet face or door frame with an electric drill. Put the door back in place, and then use a screw bit with the drill to screw the hinges securely in place using the wood screws that you purchased with the brass hinges. Check the doors after screwing the hinges in place for smooth movement, and make any adjustments to the screw positioning needed before using the doors as you normally would.
