How to Install the Edging for Laminate

The edging pieces for laminate counters are called end caps. One dead giveaway that an amateur installed a laminate countertop is exposed particleboard edges that have not been covered with end caps. Installing this edging is a simple process involving two parts. First, you must install the end cap battons. A batton is a piece of wood or particleboard that provides a correctly sized and textured foundation for the end caps. Only after the battons are secure can you install the end caps themselves.

Instructions

    • 1

Dry-fit the end cap battons included in your laminate counter set and ensure that they are sized correctly. Apply wood glue to each batton and press it in place along its corresponding counter edge. Use padded clamps to hold each batton securely until it dries.

Dry-fit the end caps just as you did the battons to check their length. Once you are positive the lengths are correct, adhere each end cap to its corresponding batton with a warm iron set on low. Wait two to three hours to allow the adhesive to dry well.

Examine the counter and look for any edges of the end caps that are not flush with the counter. Use a file to shave away any such areas, filing only toward the adhesive to avoid pulling off the end caps. Clean the finished countertops with a damp rag to remove filing dust.
