How to Hang Wall Cabinets Tightly

A properly hung wall cabinet can stay in place for decades. Cabinets are often loose when they are not hung from a secure enough structure. Sheetrock is not strong enough to support wall cabinets, but the studs behind it can support the weight of cabinetry. To hang wall cabinets so they are tight and secure, you must attach them to the stud using the proper screws and a power drill.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a straight vertical line where you want the row of cabinets to begin on the wall.

    • 2

Place a stud finder against the wall, and move it from left to right. Go along the area of the wall where you plan to hang the cabinets, and mark each stud with a pencil.

    • 3

Measure from the cabinet line created in Step 1 to the first stud mark using a measuring tape. Then measure from the first stud mark to the second.

    • 4

Transfer and mark these same measurements on the back of the cabinet so you know exactly where to screw in the cabinets. Draw two vertical stud lines on the back of the cabinet.

    • 5

Drill four holes on the back of the cabinet along the stud line -- two near the top and two near the bottom -- using the electric drill.

    • 6

Place the top cabinet onto a cabinet jack, which holds the cabinet in position.

    • 7

Place a level on the cabinet to make sure it is level before screwing it in. Adjust the cabinet, if necessary, until it is level.

    • 8

Place a washer over a 2-1/2 inch deck screw. Insert the screw with washer into the predrilled hole in the cabinet, and screw it into place using the drill.

    • 9

Place the level against the cabinet again to make sure it is level. Then screw in the three remaining screws.
