How to Light a Galley Kitchen

The galley kitchen layout features a long narrow space with work areas and appliances on the two long walls. The length of the room makes it difficult for natural light to reach the entire kitchen, especially if there are no more than two windows in the entire space. Capitalizing on the natural light you do have and accenting it with artificial lighting gives you better working light in the kitchen. Plan out your galley kitchen lighting based on the current light levels and the problem areas when it comes to visibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk through the kitchen at various times of the day, including the night. Look specifically at the lighting situation. Stand in different areas of the kitchen where you would normally work to determine where you need additional lighting.

    • 2

Emphasize the light coming in from the windows in the kitchen and adjoining rooms. Swap out window coverings to sheer curtains or blinds that allow light into the room.

    • 3

Install track lighting to run the length of the kitchen for general overhead illumination. If you don't like the look of track lighting, install recessed lighting down the length of the galley kitchen.

    • 4

Add lighting to your range hood if you don't already have a light there. This helps illuminate the cooking area while you prepare meals.

    • 5

Install under-cabinet lighting along all of the upper cabinets to cast task-specific light down on the work areas. Even at the far end away from any windows you'll have functional lighting to complete tasks in the kitchen.
