Painting the Toe Kick on a Cabinet

A cabinet toe kick is often the most overlooked part of a kitchen cabinet. The toe kick is the board directly under the base cabinets. It sometimes features decorative moldings. When repainting kitchen cabinets, it is important not to forget the toe kick as it usually sees harsher treatment than the rest of the cabinets. It is “kicked,” and the finish can be easily damaged. Paint can restore the look of your toe kick and cabinets.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the toe kick with a damp rag and household cleanser. Cabinet toe kicks get dirty easily. Removing the dirt before painting will ensure your paint finish looks clean.

    • 2

Place drop cloths or use newspaper and painter's tape to cover the floor beneath the toe kick. This will protect the floor and make painting the toe kick easier.

    • 3

Apply latex primer to the toe kick with a paintbrush. Coat the entire toe kick with the primer. Let the primer dry.

    • 4

Apply paint to the cabinet toe kick with a paintbrush. Brush on the latex paint, working from one end of the toe kick to the other. Let the first coat of paint dry for a few hours or until completely dry. Repeat until you have applied three coats of paint on the cabinet toe kick.
