Drilling New Faucet Holes in a Stainless Steel Sink

Stainless steel sinks may not come with predrilled faucet holes, in which case you will need to drill them yourself. You can also drill holes in a stainless steel sink for vegetable sprayers or soap dispensers. A regular drill bit will not cut through a stainless steel sink easily, so you will need a specialty bit. Drilling a guide hole first will make the process less time-consuming and hard on your drill.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill
  • 3/8-inch carbide bit
  • 1/2-inch carbide bit

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the spot on the sink where the center of the hole will be, using a permanent marker. Fit a drill with a 3/8-inch carbide bit.

    • 2

Press the drill bit into the mark and begin drilling. Apply steady, heavy pressure to the drill until the bit goes all the way through. This 3/8-inch hole is a guide hole.

    • 3

Remove the 3/8-inch drill bit from the drill. Replace it with a 1/2-inch drill bit.

    • 4

Insert the drill bit into the guide hole and turn on the drill. Move the drill bit down through the guide hole until it widens to 1/2 inch and the bit goes in and out of the hole easily. Remove the drill bit.
