Design Ideas for a Range Backsplash With a Chimney Vent Hood

Designing a range backsplash around a chimney vent hood is an exciting opportunity to highlight the appliance as an architectural feature instead of a kitchen eyesore. Chimney vent hoods differ from other vent hoods because its ducting is incorporated into its stylish design as a "chimney" that extends from the vent hood's top and into the ceiling or wall.
  1. Materials

    • The same materials used for designing backsplashes can be carried up to the space behind a chimney vent hood. Since this is the main area of the kitchen where the cooking takes place, select durable materials that resist staining and are easy to clean. Ceramic, porcelain and glass tiles are a common choice for these features, but other options include tin or faux tin, stainless steel panels and beadboard painted with a durable, easy-to-clean finish.

    Seamless Tile Design

    • Streamlining the look of the backsplash behind the range and chimney vent hood with the same tile or materials used for the kitchen's backsplash, highlights the chimney vent hood as a decorative feature. This design solution does not draw additional attention to the continued backsplash, since there are not any variations in its design around the kitchen. The kitchen's other features, including the chimney vent hood, cabinets and fixtures, pop out against the continuous backsplash.

    Three Focal Points

    • Instead of blending the spaces behind the range and chimney vent hood, accent them as individual areas with featured mosaic designs. The one backsplash area becomes three sections -- the backsplash behind the range, and the two spaces on either side of the vent hood's vertical chimney part. Treat the two upper sections as picturesque areas and lay out a framed tile design with decorative tile pieces at each center. Behind the range, repeat the same design, only making its central decorative tile arrangement more substantial and elaborate. Creating three design areas can also be done with various backsplash materials to coordinate with any style kitchen.

    Two Complementary Designs

    • The two sides above the chimney vent hood do not have to be decorated with the same materials as the range's backsplash. This is an opportunity to incorporate two complementary design elements that were hard to choose from -- one for behind the range and the other for above the hood.

Two types of complementary tiles can be used to add layers of dimension to the cooking area. Feature one above the hood, and carry its theme in other parts of the kitchen with accent pieces of the same color, and feature the other one as the range's backsplash, and continue that as the main backsplash above the counters. Coordinate decorative tin with the chimney vent hood, and inlay them into a focal point design repeating the tile used for the backsplash above the cabinets.
