Painting Birch Plywood Kitchen Cabinets

Paint is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to update your kitchen. If you have birch plywood kitchen cabinets, you can use latex paint on them. The cabinets will need a lot of preparation before they can be painted. However, proper preparation will ensure that you get the best finish for your cabinets. You can use either oil-based or latex paint to paint your cabinets. Oil-based paint dries harder than latex but is messy to clean up and takes longer to dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Deconstruct the birch plywood cabinets. Unscrew the hardware from the doors. Remove the doors from the cabinets. Remove the cabinet shelves if possible.

    • 2

Clean the cabinets. Use a liquid deglosser and an abrasive pad to wipe down all of the cabinets. Immediately after scrubbing, wipe away the excess with a clean rag.

    • 3

Correct surface imperfections in the birch cabinets with wood putty. Use the putty and a putty knife to fill holes, dents, and cracks in the wood. Let the putty dry per the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Sand the cabinets with fine-grit sandpaper. Sanding will smooth out the wood and remove the gloss on the birch cabinets. Remove the sanding dust from the cabinets with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Prime the cabinets with a paintbrush and a foam paint roller. Cover the large flat areas of the cabinets with the foam paint roller and the other areas with the paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry.

    • 6

Sand the primed cabinets with fine-grit sandpaper. Do not sand all the way through the primer. The purpose of sanding after priming is to remove small bumps or brush strokes in the finish. Remove the dust with a damp cloth.

    • 7

Paint the birch cabinets with paint, a paint roller and paintbrush. Let the first coat of paint dry for several hours.

    • 8

Sand the painted cabinets with fine-grit sandpaper. Work gently so you do not sand too much from the cabinet. You simply want to remove any bumps or brush marks. Remove the sanding dust with a damp rag.

    • 9

Paint the birch cabinets a second time with a paintbrush and paint roller. Let the second coat of paint dry for 24 hours. Paint a third coat of paint on the cabinets as necessary.

    • 10

Reattach the doors and hardware to the cabinets with a screwdriver.
