How to Make Kitchen Hardware

Adding hardware to your kitchen cabinet doors makes the doors easier to use and protects them from wear. Virtually any small object works as a pull or handle; let your kitchen’s style, available materials and your personal tastes guide your choice. For example, for a beach cottage kitchen you could use small pieces of coral or polyurethane-coated seashells; for a natural, contemporary style kitchen, you could use polished stones or wine corks; or for a modern kitchen you could craft pulls and handles from matching silverware or knobs from soda caps.

Things You'll Need

  • Styrofoam slabs
  • Hammer
  • 1 1/2-inch hex cap bolts with nuts
  • Smaller objects for use as knobs
  • Construction adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

Pound the screw end of 1 1/2-inch hex cap bolts into a Styrofoam slab so that the bolts’ caps are flat and face you. Use as many bolts as you need to make enough knobs for your kitchen cabinets.

    • 2

Dab a dot of construction grade adhesive onto each bolt's cap. Place a small knob object that you have selected onto each glued bolt cap. Wipe away dribbling glue with a cotton swab. Allow the glue to dry for as long as its packaging directs.

    • 3

Pull the decorated bolts from the foam block. You can now install them through your kitchen cabinet’s existing knob holes. Use the nuts that came with the bolts to secure the DIY knobs from the back of the cabinet doors.

    • 4

Insert more bolts into a fresh Styrofoam slab. This time, though, insert the bolts in pairs, spacing them according to the length of the objects you’ll use for drawer pulls.

    • 5

Glue the top of each bolt cap and attach one drawer pull object over each pair of bolts. Allow the glue to dry before removing and installing the DIY drawer pulls.
